After witnessing the birth of a new foal, Kaitlynn was bubbling. Especially after Dr. Stearns had gifted the new colt to her. She only had three more stalls to muck out, but with the prospect of bringing Bessie and her new colt out to play, the work was tedious and seemed to take ages. Finally, though, she finished, and after hauling out the last load of manure and putting away her shovel, she was finally able to go back to the mustang and her son.

The new colt was already on his hooves, his legs surprisingly stable. As Kaitlynn opened the gate, Bessie stood as well. Kaitlynn smiled at the pair. "Ready, you two?" Knowing they couldn't respond, she reached for Bessie's halter. Bess was a kind and gentle mare, so she accepted the approach without question.

Kaitlynn led the fourteen-year-old new mother out of the barn, her young colt hobbling along behind her. The stable hand, now proud horse owner, led the pair into the smallest of the pastures on the ranch, closing the gate behind the horses. Kaitlynn climbed onto the fence and perched over the top, a smile on her face as she watched her colt explore the world for the first time.

He was timid at first, but it didn't take him long to start running about. Before long, he started jumping and bucking and making a show about kicking his heels into the air. Kaitlynn laughed as she watched him, her green eyes sparkling with joy.

"You sure know how to fly, huh boy?" she whispered. As she watched the colt kick out against a backdrop of the setting sun, a thought crossed her mind. "That's it, isn't it? Flying Colors." Shortly after the words were out of her mouth, the colt began strutting about, eliciting a giggle from Kaitlynn.

She hopped down into the pasture, calling out to Bessie, knowing the colt would follow. She petted the mare's face for a moment, holding out her free hand to the colt. Shyly, he drew closer, and Kaitlynn smiled sweetly at him, murmuring words of encouragement, until she was able to reach out and pet him. This time, he didn't shy away from her touch, and she praised him.

She moved to place both hands on the colt, and while he remained still, begin to move her hands down his body. With his mother nearby, the colt was calm and peaceful, and didn't resist her touch. "It's alright, Benny. You're okay, I promise." She wasn't exactly sure where the nickname had come from, but as soon as it left her lips, the colt twisted his head around to nuzzle at her side.

Kaitlynn laughed, moving her hands back to Benny's face. Movement near the fence caught her eye, and she looked up to see Dr. Stearns leaning against the wooden barrier, watching them. Bessie moved toward him immediately, tossing her head as her longtime rider reached out his hand to her. Surprisingly, though, Benny remained by Kaitlynn's side, and didn't move to Dr. Stearns until Kaitlynn made her way to the fence.

"So, did you have an epiphany watching him?" Dr. Stearns had a small smile on his face, as if he had known all along what would happen.

Kaitlynn giggled as Benny bumped his head into her side again, and she draped an arm across his back. "Dr. Stearns, I would like you to meet Silver Winds' newest colt, Flying Colors, affectionately known as Benny."

The vet smiled, one eyebrow raised slightly. "Benny? Where did that one come from?"

Kaitlynn merely shrugged her shoulders. "No clue. But I know where the Flying Colors came from. He's highly energetic, and after he ran around a short while, started jumping and kicking. That, plus the sun setting behind him, and it just meshed. But Benny.. That just popped into my head. No clue why nor how."

Dr. Stearns laughed. "I believe it. Well, I think it's time to put these two to bed and get you home, what do you say?" Kaitlynn nodded in agreement, and Dr. Stearns opened the gate, catching hold of Bessie's halter. Kaitlynn led Benny with her arm still draped over his shoulders, and they put them back into the stall they were in before.

Kaitlynn was mostly quiet as Dr. Stearns drove her home, but there was a smile fixed to the young girl's face, a bright change from the slight sadness that usually hung around her on her daily ride home.

So, Benny has a name now. But still no proper ref.
And I have plans for Kaitlynn, specifically with her background and why she hates leaving the ranch.
But that shall be revealed later. For now, I leave you in suspense.

Anatomy is a little better here, but those legs bug me. Bah.
HE HAS WHITE EYELASHES. AREN'T THEY SEXY?
